Goal Setting Overwhelm Overload Busted!

Are you feeling overwhelmed with the idea of planning and working toward your short termmid term and long term goals? Or are you thinking, “What should my goals be?” No worries! This is a very common question many of us have asked ourselves time and time again. It’s like you know you need a change… some type of change… but what? Truth is, because it’s so easy to “keep on keeping on”, we often get comfortable and settle for “good enough” because it’s not that bad, right?

If the idea of steering your life in a new direction is so overwhelming that you don’t make any type of change…PLEASE SHAKE THAT UNCERTAINTY OFF! Let’s take this goal setting thing one baby step at a time, ok? I want you to look at your long-term goals (remember, this could be a 5-10 year goal), and break that goal down into many mini-goals, if you will. This is how your short term and mid-term goals are developed. Here’s an example I want you to follow. We’ll use a fake person named Sue:

In 5 years Sue decided she wants to be a self-employed Life Coach. She feels she has the people skills needed to be a really good Life Coach who can help others weave through the road blocks that are stopping them from making progress toward achieving their goals and dreams.

Sue works a full time job, and is a single mother of 3 children, so her schedule is pretty tight, only allowing her, maybe, 10 hours each week to work toward her goal of becoming a Life Coach.

Sue’s first list of short term goals are:

The Character Challenge: Week 3

The Character Challenge: Week 3 is the final in a series of blog posts designed to help you identify the areas of your person that you need to work on improving. The Character Challenge: Week 2 received such a great response! The Character Challenge: Week 2

The Character Challenge: Week 1” was a HUGE success… THANK YOU and CONGRATS! I am so glad to see you take the first step in learning how to live and love your life to the fullest. The purpose of this exercise is to help you tackle your goal, one small piece at a time. So, keep writing down your goals and reaching them, one step at a time. When you look back at where you started… what an inspirational story you will have to tell!

The Character Challenge: Week 2

This week, I want you to look at another list of three character traits and see which one you need to work on. Remember, this could be a little hard to do. Trust me when I say I know that change is hard, no matter how big or little. Keep in mind that you will be in a much happier place… one goal at a time.

If you have not read, “The Character Challenge: Week 1 and left your responses in the comments section, or emailed your reaponses to me, I urge you to do that now. Also, if you haven’t read “The Character Challenge: Intro to a 3-Part Series to Help Clarify Your Personal Development Journey,” This article explains the purpose of the challenge. The Character Challenge: Intro to a 3-Part Series to Help Clarify Your Personal Development Journey

This introduction to the 3-part Character Challenge isn’t about the type of challenge that will dare you to do something that can hurt you, in any way. Instead, this will actually challenge you to take a good look at the type of character you are, and to see how you can improve upon at least one aspect of your being. You’re probably a great person to yourself and others, but there’s always a way to bring out the better you. You know my motto: Live and love your life!

There are dozens of character traits that make up our being, but I’m going to cover just a few of the most common character traits that people often struggle with, when working on their personal development. In this 3-part series, I’m going to cover the following 18 character traits:

Part 1:

  • Attentiveness – Showing the worth of a person or task by giving my undivided concentration.
  • Boldness – Confidence that what I have to say or do is true, right, and just.
  • Creativity – Approaching a need, a task, or an idea from a new perspective.
  • Decisiveness – The ability to recognize key factors and finalize difficult decisions.
  • Dependability – Fulfilling what I consented to do, even if it means unexpected sacrifice.
  • Determination – Purposing to accomplish right goals at the right time, regardless of the opposition.

8 Changes That Will Boost Your Personal Development Success

So you realize that it’s never too late to start working on your personal development goals. New Year’s Resolutions don’t just start on January 1st. They can be planned and started on any given day of the year! Would you agree that any personal or professional goals you plan to achieve, must start with your mental attitude? Yep! You have to work on them from the mind down. Like the saying goes, “Lead with the head and the body will follow” or every variation of this quote you can find. You get the point, though.

For whatever reason, the mental state is the hardest part to change. Think about it… when you want to tighten up your abs or buttocks for the 20 year class reunion that’s coming up in six months, you’ll quickly make the decision to start going to the gym. “It’s only for six months,” you say. But to make permanent lifestyle changes, even just a little bit at a time, seems like a wall too tall to climb. If you have to “trick” yourself into making small changes every six months, then so be it. By whatever means, get it done!

Personal development is a life-long journey… adventure… new road to travel. But it’s in your best interest, so you’ll need the proper equipment to make the ride. You wouldn’t attempt to travel from NYC to LA on a tricycle. Sure, you’ll eventually make it there, but you want to see a bit more progress a lot faster than that, so you plan to drive yur car. However, you may need to get an oil change, tune up and new tires and pull off with a full tank of gas to start rolling.

With your personal development goals, you will need to arm yourself with a positive mind that you can do it. Reading books is a great way to get mentally prepared. Self Serve Customer Service

We often spend so much time taking care of others, that we tend to put our own needs aside. I know this to be especially true with women. We feel the need to nurture everyone else, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with making sure you are well taken care of… mind, body and soul.

I was a single parent for many years. When my kids were about 3 and 8 years old, and I came down with the flu. that I realized I needed to make sure I was in good shape from head to toe, in order to be able to help others . My daughter was sickly from the time she was a few weeks old , and my son was very active. One of my grandmothers was recovering from a botched-up back surgery and needed help around the house. Working two jobs allowed me very little sleep, and I often neglected my own well being. Being sick gave me a new perspective on the priorities in my life.

Set goals to accomplish whatever you want…   YOU CAN DO IT!

I realized I had to eat better, get more exercise and more sleep. I also had to do a much better job with time management. My schedule had been dictated by my jobs and kids, and not much of that could be changed. But, I had to learn to say, “No” to requests to help with situations outside of my house. Not easy, but extremely necessary! Honestly, I couldn’t tell you exactly how I got everything done, but I truly understand how my immune system took a beating, and a really bad one at that! I had to learn to take care of me, first, in order to be able to take good care of my kids… PERIOD!

Some people take a “Me, Me, Me” attitude, but in the wrong way. I’m saying, yes, you need to take care of yourself. But that’s not to say you shouldn’t be concerned and helpful to others. This blog talks about personal development, customer service (including self-service) and home decor. You may think home decor is a far stretch, but your surroundings have a big affect on your mood, therefore is a factor in how you see and treat others, much like how music can have a big impact on you.

It’s The Sneezy Sleepy Season!

Great… The warm weather and beautiful colors of Spring are coming alive 🙂 Uh oh... The warm weather and beautiful colors of Spring are coming alive 😦  ‘Tis the season for allergies! Allergy symptoms are something I personally didn’t experience until about six years ago. I’ve known dozens of people who sneeze, cough and even suffer asthma attacks due to their allergies to outdoor elements. I think some doctors’ offices are busier with allergy-related appointments, in the Spring and Summer, than with Flu and cold weather issues in the winter. Isn’t it crazy how such beauty can bring on such misery?

Fortunately, we will continue to enjoy the beauty of the trees and flowers, that cause the suffering we endure, for the rest of our days. An even bigger fortunately, is that there are ways to help ease the symptoms. Ease of allergy symptoms don’t begin and end with medication. You can actually help prevent the causes of those symptoms naturally, too.

One of the easiest ways, to naturally keep your allergy symptoms at bay, is to change what you surround yourself with each and every day. Food, pets, fuzzy toys and, yes, even your bed covers and pillows may be the cause of your suffering. There’s an extensive allergy test that can tell you about which foods may be causing your allergy symptoms. There are specific dogs and cats that are claimed to be hypo-allergenic.

The labels on fuzzy toys should clearly state if they are hypo-allergenic. Your bed covers and pillows should say they are hypo-allergenic or Down-Alternative. I’ve included an article titled, “What Is The Difference Between a Down and Down-Alternative Comforter.” It is extremely important to know each item that causes your suffering, and I want to arm you with the information I do know about.

What Do Home Decor, Personal Development and Customer Service Have In Common?

Home decor, personal development and customer service all have one thing in common… YOU! Yep… you are the common denominator between these three elements. Seems like a stretch? Well, if you follow this blog (and if you don’t, why not), you know that we talk about transforming your home environment into a space that you absolutely love right? Sort of like your piece of heaven on Earth 🙂

We also talk about different areas of your life you may want to improve in, but are not sure exactly how to start. Although there are many more pieces to the puzzle, we’re going to stay along the lines of how home decor and personal development both tie in to customer service. Not just customer service as it relates to exchanging money for a product or service, but how you treat each and every person you come in contact with. Home Decor

So, you’re not sure exactly how your home decor is affecting your mood? Everything from the paint colors to the shape of your mirror, havesome type of affect on you. Do you walk up to your mirror and say to yourself, “This mirror puts me in a funk!”? Probably not, but subconsciously, it may, and you don’t even realize it.

I’m sure you’ve heard about how colors have a big affect on our mood, right? If not, I strongly urge you to go back and read my blog post, “Bring Out Your Colorful Character” In that post, we cover a few different colors and what they may say about your personality. But, if you’re space is not designed in these colors, or variants of them, then guess what… your space isn’t representing you to the fullest!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

May this Valentine’s Day find you in the company that you want to keep 🙂 Don’t settle for less than you want. Life is too short for that! Have you given into the hype that you have to be with someone… anyone on Valentine’s Day? For what? Candy, flowers or bragging rights that you received an expensive piece of jewelry? I hope and pray that you’re not living that kind of life!

So, what are you up to this super-charged, romantic day? Movies, dinner… what? Are you planning on spending it alone, cuddled up with a good book, or a good tv marathon? That’s cool, too 🙂  In either case, is it what you want to do or is it by force, not by choice? Basically… are you living and loving your life, day in and day out?

I often wonder why so many people say that they live their life for themselves, but get caught up in what society says they’re supposed to be doing, and who they should be doing it with. Where along life’s journey, do people become so afraid of expressing themselves, that they eventually end up representing someone else dreams and expectations?

We all have heard the saying, “Life is too short.” That is totally true! So, what would it take for you to live the life that you could completely love? Isn’t living the lifestyle you desire, the whole reason behind every decision you’ve made? If it hasn’t been for you, then who?

I’m sure you’ve had suggestions, from family and friends, to live this way or follow that path… go to college or the military, get this degree, etc. I will say that, as a parent, it is hard to see our kids make certain kinds of decisions. We feel we know what’s best for our little one’s, and we do, for the most part. But not always for the most important part... fulfilling their dreams.

Perfect example… I sent my oldest off to attend college in NY to major in Audio/ Video Production (his choice). He ended up a theater major. That was a hard pill for me to swallow, but it was his reality. Not easy to support, especially since I was raised by a “starving artist” and know the struggle that more than likely is in his future.

Growing Stains

What are growing stains, you ask. Those things that stick to us like glue! They are more commonly referred to as habits. Since I’m talking about stains, yes, I’m talking about the bad habits we struggle to change.

Isn’t it crazy how changing good things, like our style of dress, trying out a new club or starting a new job, seems to bring upon a spark in us? I’ve never understood this, but have always invited this type of change.

But, why is it that when it comes to changing those ugly, bad habits, like smoking, drinking too much coffee, or starting down the path of living a healthier lifestyle, that we suddenly become anxious, frustrated and stressed? I don’t know either, but when you find out, please let me know 🙂

So, how’s it going with your New Year’s resolutions, so far? Have you lost a little weight? Are you seeing more tone in your muscles? Are you still eating the one salad, per day, that you swore to include in your meal planning efforts? No. What happened? How did you get off track? Have you resigned your resolutions until next New Year, again, or are you planning to start back on that path a little later this year? Let’s talk about it!

Question… who said you need to make those changes? Do you feel the need to make them or was the thought of changing that habit initiated by something someone said? My take on it is this… if you are trulyhappy with living the way you live, mind, body and soul, then why are you even thinking of changing anything? I do believe we can all improve in the different aspects of our lives, but to our liking, not someone else’s.

That’s the point of personal development. Evolve into the person you want to be.
